You have to laugh it away sometimes.
- How did you come to the idea of drawing with water?
"I found a video of an old Chinese man writing calligraphy on the ground with water. So at first I just copied him. But then I realized that it's more fun and attractive to draw. And I also found that if I draw by dripping water it looks even better. One other thing is that it's unique."
- Your calligraphy is beautiful but is that what you do?
"No no. I'm an ex-teacher. I used to teach art at junior highs and elementary schools."
- When was the toughest moment throughout your career as an art teacher?
"When the middle school kids were out of control. At first, I might have tried stuff like corporal punishment. But in the end, you can't push the kids into doing something by violence. You have to accept them and be with it.
You know, I also taught at a school for Japanese kids in London."
- How was teaching in London?
"London was fun but it was also hard. Parents who send their kids to those kinds of schools were all upper class and elitists. So they have an extremely high expectation for the school. So if we screw something up they're all up against us. They're practically like monster parents. But I used to try to sneak out of those situations with my sense of humor. I mean, you can't really take every single thing seriously. You have to laugh it away sometimes. I just can't live like that."
