It shouldn't be that way.
"I interned at a orphanage in Cambodia when I was a sophomore. There were about 30 kids living in that orphanage and there was this one boy I got really closed to. One time, another intern saw him playing and said, 'He probably would have become an engineer if only he wasn't born here.'
I realized how I hadn't noticed how brilliant his talent was, which seemed so obvious after hearing those words.
And, if the boy was born in Japan, he would have had all the freedom to become whatever he wanted or to go wherever he wished. Japan is where that kind of freedom is promised. But he was born in Cambodia. And because of that, despite his personality and brilliant talent, the environment he is in is going to decide his future for him.
I want to change that. It's not right. It shouldn't be that way. I want to work so that I can change that situation. I understand that there's not much I can do now. But there's no sense in just giving up. So, even if it takes 10 years or 20 years, if it's possible to stop that vicious cycle, I want to. And I will."
